Transfer Domain from Google Domain to Cloudflare
On June 15, 2023, Google announced an agreement with Squarespace to transfer all domain registrations and related customer accounts from Google Domains to Squarespace.
As such. Google Domains will no longer provide new domain registrations. Google Domain was one of the few straight forward, no-nonsense domain registrar out there.
Since I did not want to transition to Squarespace. and that I was already using Cloudflare for my domain DNS, I decided to transfer my domains from Google Domain to Cloudflare.
Unlock your Domain in Google Domain
Before you can transfer a domain out of Google Domain, you need to unlock it first.
Login to your Google Domain account. Go to Registration Settings, and toggle the unlock option for the domain.
You may need to wait about 24 Hours after unlocking the domain before you can start a domain transfer at the new registrar.
Get the Auth Code
In the Transfer Out option, click on Get auth code.
Copy down this auth code. This will be needed for the new registrar to complete the domain transfer.
Start the Transfer in Cloudflare
Login to your Cloudflare account.
Click on the Transfer Domains option.
If you are already using Cloudflare to provide DDoS protection for your domains, you will see the list of domains you can transfer to Cloudflare here.
Transferring a domain to Cloudflare (or any other domain registrars) will require you to purchase an additional year of domain registration.
Select the domain you want to transfer, and confirm.
Enter your contact information, then Confirm and Finalize Transfer.
If successful, you will see that the domain transfers are underway.
Check your Google Domain Email to Approve Transfer
Once the transfer is started, you should see an email from Google Domain asking to approve the transfer.
Click on the link to start approving the transfer.
The link will bring you to Google Domains. Click Transfer to finish the transfer.
That's it!
Once complete, you will receive a confirmation email from Cloudflare that the transfer is completed.
